The Springers are among the best-known Jewish families in Kingston. Sam Springer was born in Russia at the turn of the twentieth century, and his family immigrated to Belleville in 1908. There he met a girl from Kingston, Seddy Palmer, daughter of Benjamin and Hinda Palmer. They married in 1932 and moved to Kingston from Belleville in 1935, establishing a women’s clothing store, Artistic Ladies’ Wear, on this corner. The historic stone building was demolished in the early 1970s.
After World War II, Sam Springer managed to locate at least fifteen members of his immediate and extended family who had remained behind in Europe, and survived the Nazi concentration camps. He brought them over to Canada, settled them in Toronto, and attended to their needs until his death in 1974.
